Day 5 of Election Week Self-Regulation Practice

The Neuroscience of Opposite Action

A couple of years ago, before my first yoga retreat, I actually emailed the teacher (the phenomenal Sigal Brier) asking to skip meditation because it "wasn't my thing." Looking back, I have to laugh - my very resistance was pointing directly at what I needed most.

This is so often how our nervous system works. The thing we most want to avoid might be exactly what would help us regulate.

Today's practice explores this paradox through "opposite action" - a powerful tool for working with election stress. When anxiety makes us collapse, lengthening might help. When overwhelm speeds us up, slowing down might be the answer. And when election intensity makes us want to hole up inside, get outside.

I'm sharing these practices daily through November 5th because I believe regulation is non-negotiable during high-stakes moments. Let me know how they're landing for you.

Take good care,

Rachael
