Leading today can feel like being stuck in a relentless hamster wheel. The more we try to rely on the ways we’ve always done things, the less effective we become—and the more our teams and results suffer.
I see this pattern everywhere: ambitious leaders juggling priorities and even exceeding goals, but constantly bracing for the next crisis (personal, professional, political, financial, global) or managing the fallout of the last. They turn to trainings, strategic plans, or change management protocol to address what are deeply human responses to stress and change—but these approaches fall short. It’s exhausting, disorienting, and unsustainable.
SHIFT is different because it starts where you are—offering immediate relief for the paralysis of leadership.
The cost of this paralysis isn’t just professional—it’s deeply personal. At 6:23 PM on a March evening in 2019, I was preparing to speak to a group of leaders about work-family policy and practice. I was using the pause between my day job, and my speaking gig to get some quick nourishment. I stood with a rice bowl in one hand and my phone in the other when the text came through. My hands trembled as my eyes scanned a loved one’s MRI results, my mind torn between personal crisis and professional focus.
In that moment, as I processed life-changing medical news, all the leadership frameworks I’d studied felt hollow: 'Maintain composure.' 'Set boundaries.' 'Stay strategic.' They didn’t account for the complexity of human leadership in the face of chaos.
That’s the heart of the problem: traditional frameworks prioritize efficiency at the expense of humanity. They don’t equip us to lead in the messy, complex reality of modern work.
What I’ve learned—and what SHIFT embraces—is that leadership isn’t about being perfect or properly composed. It’s about aligning your humanity with your leadership.
Leadership paralysis often arises because we try to fight against our natural human responses to complexity. When we align with those capacities instead, everything changes.
The SHIFT Framework is designed to help leaders:
Ground in Security to face uncertainty with clarity.
Maintain Horizon to hold a vision amidst daily fires.
Focus on Impact to prioritize what truly matters.
Build Fluidity to navigate change with agility.
Strengthen Ties to nurture relationships that sustain progress.
These aren’t just skills—they’re survival strategies for leadership today.
I recently spoke about these themes in light of the upcoming political transitions. The webinar recording touches on how these capacities can guide leaders through moments of intense uncertainty.
Here’s how you can start:
Pause and notice where you feel stuck. Acknowledge the areas of leadership that feel like gridlock.
Identify one key capacity—Security, Horizon, Impact, Fluidity, or Ties—where you need the most relief.
Take one aligned action today. This could be a small practice like setting a clear boundary, revisiting your priorities, or reaching out for support.
The Path Forward
Leadership today requires more than resilience—it demands a shift in how we think, work, and lead. It’s not about perfection; it’s about embracing our humanity, aligning with our strengths, and creating sustainable solutions for ourselves and our organizations.
Leadership doesn’t have to feel this hard. That’s why I’m offering two ways to dive into SHIFT:
SHIFT Foundations: A self-paced program designed to help leaders integrate practical tools, regain momentum, and stop firefighting. This course is perfect for leaders who want to:
Upskill their leadership and address today’s workplace challenges with a sustainable approach.
Join a community of forward-thinking leaders who reject increasingly tone deaf leadership modeled by Elon Musk and now Mark Zuckerberg.
Choose to colleagues to explore how to apply the SHIFT content both individually and within their organization with peer support.
The course (and the free preview module) is live and ready to help you start shifting immediately.
The SHIFT Experience Beta: A live cohort for leaders ready to break free from leadership paralysis and build the capacity to lead with humanity and impact. In this course, you’ll:
Connect with other senior leaders who “get it,” creating a powerful network of peers from across industries.
Share and hear real-world leadership experiences while problem-solving challenges together.
Receive personalized guidance and support from a skilled facilitator and coach who understands the complexities you face.
Which path resonates most with you? Let’s shift how leadership feels—and works—together.
