SHIFT Deep Dive Week 3: When Change is Constant, What Stays the Same?
I’m heading to the Transform conference in Las Vegas today, which feels fitting because I’ve been reflecting on transformation in my own life—inspired by my new business cards.
There, printed on each one, is my maiden name. For years, I held onto my married name because I thought it was the only way I’d be recognized for my work and accomplishments. I built my career under that name, having married at 26, and it felt like letting it go might mean losing part of my professional identity.
But over time, I realized what I’ve always known to be true: It’s not my name that defines me, but the work I do, the impact I make, and the values I stand for. A name can change, but what truly matters remains.
That realization is at the heart of fluidity in SHIFT—the idea that things evolve, whether it’s our identities, our organizations, or even the language we use. But beneath those shifts, the essence of what we contribute and why we do this work stays the same.
We’re seeing this play out in workplaces right now. Some are trying to push critical terms—like DEI—out of the professional lexicon. Some companies are renaming initiatives, rebranding departments, or shifting how they talk about people-centered work in response to external pressures.
But here’s the thing: words may change, but the fundamental human needs at work don’t. People still want to feel valued. They still need environments where they can contribute their unique talents. The work of building equitable, supportive workplaces continues, even if we have to adapt how we talk about it.
That’s what Fluidity in the SHIFT model is all about. It’s not about giving up on values when the landscape shifts—it’s about finding new ways to uphold and express them. It’s about knowing what to preserve and what to evolve so we can move forward with integrity.
This week, we’re diving into fluidity from two angles:
Wednesday: "The Paradox of Stability in Change" (Macro)
How do we create clarity and direction when everything feels uncertain? We’ll explore practical ways to help teams navigate change while staying anchored in what truly matters.
Friday: "The Spheres of Uncertainty: Finding Your Center When Everything's in Motion" (Micro)
When the world around you is constantly shifting, how do you stay grounded? This piece introduces the "Spheres of Uncertainty" framework—helping you focus on what you can control, influence, and let go of so you can lead with more confidence.
How are you navigating change in your work and life right now?
